Duterte hopes peace talks with Reds will succeed: Sana maawa ang Diyos sa atin
President Rodrigo Duterte hopes the peace talks with the communist movement will finally succeed, after several botched tries.
In his speech at the celebration of the country’s 120th Independence Day in Kawit, Cavite Tuesday (June 12), Duterte said he is ready to talk to the communists because “they are more or less fighting for something that is a matter of principle to them. “
The President added that he “loves” communists to the point that he is willing to shoulder the cost of accommodating Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison should he return to the country to take part in the negotiations.
“Sana naman maawa ang Diyos sa atin. If it succeeds then my only problem would be the rebellion in Mindanao,” he said.
Duterte earlier said formal peace talks with the CPP-National Democratic Front may start again in July.
Ahead of the resumption of the negotiations, a Manila court allowed five consultants of the National Democratic Front (NDF) to travel to the Netherlands to attend backchannel talks between the government and communist rebels.
