Duterte to Imee: I will make Marcos’ deal ‘possible’
President Rodrigo Duterte assured Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos he would make into reality her family’s offer to return part of the $10 billion assets they took for themselves.
“Hanap nang hanap ‘yung ano (Presidential Commission on Good Government). And still, sabi ni Imee, meron (pang hindi nakuha). Gusto nilang (ibalik)…That was her explanation. And I said, ‘Well, I will make it possible’,” said Duterte in an interview with media early Wednesday morning.
Duterte insisted that any compromise deal with the Marcoses would be have to be sanctioned by Congress and processed by the Department of Justice, Department of Finance, and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Experts claimed that Congress need not dip its fingers in the issue as the PCGG charter allowed it to enter a settlement with the Marcoses.
“Hindi ‘yung sabi na moronic ako na pumayag. I cannot agree or disagree with a proposition na wala akong authority. The President, remember, only enforces the agreements. The President cannot make the agreement and enforce it,” said Duterte.
“This is for the … ‘yung isang moron na kagaya ko. Sabi niya, moron daw ako. For his education,” he added.
