President Rodrigo Duterte said he offered Teodoro Locsin Jr. to replace Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who is running as Taguig City representative in the 2019 elections.
Duterte confirmed this on Friday upon his arrival in Davao from Southeast Asian leaders’ gathering in Bali, Indonesia.
“Naghahanap ako ng mestizo kagaya niya para hindi sila manghimago. Now, really… I don’t know if I have to — I… Baka ayaw niyang i-announce. I do not have his permission. Mahirap kasi if I give out his name tapos tatanggapin niya,” the chief executive said.
“Bong (Go), tawagan mo nga si Teddy Boy Locsin, sabihin mo kung pwede bang i-mention niya pangalan dito?”
Asked if Locsin accepted the new post, Duterte said, “I don’t know. Okay na? Okay naman sa akin ‘yan. There is a more powerful guy there. Next time around, don’t ask me question. You ask that…”
In 2016, the President appointed Locsin as the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
In his Twitter account, Locsin, who once served as press secretary of then President Corazon Aquino, said he accepted his appomtment as secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
“I was asked I said yes; but love UN, the many friends & intellectual companions I made. But I didn’t say no when asked as I didn’t when he told me I was UN ambassador. If my Tito Chito Ayala trusted him implicitly; how can I not. Still UN work is like sharpening a blade every day,” the official wrote.
“I will be Secretary of Foreign Affairs which includes the UN; I will have a direct hand until the architecture of sovereign independence in all matters of state that my team started to erect is remitted. Talent that doesn’t exist outside DFA will complete it,” he added.
