Duterte scoffs at Boracay hype: Maganda lang ang beach kasi puti
President Rodrigo Duterte is unimpressed by Boracay despite its reputation as a world class tourist destination.
In a speech before the Filipino community in Hong Kong Thursday (April 12), Duterte insisted that the seawater in Boracay has a foul smell.
“Sino taga-Boracay dito? ‘Pag naligo, maganda lang ang beach kasi white. That’s the only attraction. Amoy, ‘yung hotel, ang drainage nandiyan,” he said.
Duterte said he found the seawater in Boracay to be smelly when he went there during the 2016 elections campaign period.
“Pagpunta ko ng eleksyon, ang baho, ‘yung hangin. Sabi ko, ‘ano ba ‘to? Amoy ito ng tao o? Kaya sinirahan ko talaga because it will destroy the place forever kung hindi ko gawain,” he said.
Duterte joked that he will have the beaches in other parts of the country dyed white to attract tourists.
“Dyobos lang naman ‘yan. I-dyobos natin, oo, ‘di puti na,” he said.
Boracay is famous for its powdery white sand and clear waters.
Duterte ordered the island to be closed to tourists for six months starting April 26.
