Duterte sets Twitter on fire with ICC withdrawal: ‘Coward,’ ‘childish’
Twitter is abuzz with fierce reaction to President Duterte’s decision to withdraw the country’s membership from the International Criminal Court amid a probe into his bloody drug war.
Some netizens thought the President’s action was a cowardly move while others believed it was an abuse of power to avoid culpability.
“A very coward act from the President itself,” @ericctorres tweeted.
@jhanna412 tweeted.
Pres. Duterte has no authority to withdraw from the ICC on his own. The ICC was ratified by the Senate. Withdrawal, as a constitutional matter, requires a similar concurrence.
Also, withdrawal from ICC takes effect 1 yr after notification & w/o prejudice to any pending matter. pic.twitter.com/ATGTAGIekt

By withdrawing from the ICC, President Duterte is essentially saying he can’t run a modern state. He is making the Philippines a scruffy third world failed state. Watch investors flee.

Saan niya ba dinadala ang bansa natin? Next step is na mawawala ang Philippines sa UN… Alam ng President na may makikita ang ICC kung maiimbestigan ang mga EJKs. Autocratic moves.

Duterte can’t get away with murder yet. Withdrawal from the ICC is a long, painful, and traumatic process for a State. pic.twitter.com/okgHtNapwB

Brazen abuse of power to protect his own selfish interest and avoid culpability. What other damage can this chief still cause to the a small country like the Philippines in the international community? Unthinkable? Brace yourself!
