Duterte shrugs off going to jail over killings: Basta gusto ko malapit kay De Lima!

President Rodrigo Duterte doesn’t mind going to jail for the killings that have occurred in the course of the government’s war on drugs, but he has one special request.

In a speech at the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption’s (VACC) 19th anniversary Wednesday (August 16), Duterte said he wants to be jailed close to Senator Leila de Lima at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

“I know that they will demand to answer for all of this patay. Eh ‘di okay lang. Kung ako ang ma-no bail, eh ‘di… Basta gusto ko ilapit ako doon sa kwarto ni De Lima,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.

De Lima has been detained at Camp Crame since February over drug-related charges filed by the Department of Justice.

Duterte disputed the senator’s accusation that he was a “peeping Tom” when he shared that he was able to get a view of her cell during a recent visit to Camp Crame.

He said he was able to view De Lima’s cell through an “equipment” at the police headquarters that was perched on top of the detention facility.

“Nakita ko man ‘yung ano niya. Sabi niya nag-peeping Tom daw ako. Ikaw ang i-peeping Tom ko? Hindi na ako kailangan. Manood lang ako ng video, may kopya ako. Bakit i-peeping Tom kita?” he asked, making a veiled reference to the senator’s alleged sex video.

Duterte said he is willing to shake hands with De Lima, one of his staunchest critics, if ever they’re jailed close to each other.

“Ako, nandoon ako, payag ako. Sabihin ko lang sa pulis, magkaibigan man kami. Ilabas mo ‘yung kamay mo kay maghawakan tayo, handshake,” he said.
