President Rodrigo Duterte wants old jeepneys out of the road despite the opposition of some drivers, who say the Department of Transportation’s modernization program will drive them into debt.

In a speech at a federalism forum Tuesday (October 17), Duterte said drivers who will insist on using their old jeepneys by next year should get out of business.

“Mahirap kayo? P***** i**, sige. Magtiiis kayo sa hirap at gutom, wala akong pakialam,” he said.

Duterte said the Filipino people will suffer if old jeepneys are not phased out because the vehicles will just go on emitting harmful fumes.

“If we fail, it means more money for lung cancers and for respiratory diseases. Mga anak natin maging bobo ‘yan. Standstill ang traffic, it does not move and all the time people of the Philippines are inhaling the fumes,” he said.

Duterte said he will not change his mind about the phaseout of old jeepneys.

“Hindi ako uupo dito, magsalita ng Presidente kung hindi masusunod ang batas. P****** i**, magpapatayan talaga tayo,” he said.

According to the Department of Transportation’s timeline for the jeepney modernization program, the financing for and construction of new units will only begin in 2018. Old vehicles will be phased out between 2018 to 2020.
