Duterte snaps at Morales over tirades: Nagpipigil lang ako pero wag kang magpaka-hero!
President Rodrigo Duterte has reached the end of his rope as far as Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales’ criticism of his leadership is concerned.
Speaking before newly appointed government officials at their oath-taking in Malacañang Monday (July 17), Duterte slammed Morales for telling a Japanese television network he was “goading people to kill” with his statements in relation to the war on illegal drugs.
“Abogada naman sana ito. Ombudsman Morales find me a law which says I cannot threaten criminals with death,” he said.
After telling Morales to be “ashamed” of herself if she cannot find a law barring him from threatening criminals with death, Duterte disclosed his personal relationship with the Ombudsman.
“Ako, nagpipigil ako kasi your brother is my balae, buti alam ng tao ‘yan. Pero kung ganon ka mag-ano, nakita mo ang sitwasyon…,” he said.
Morales’ nephew, Manases Carpio, is married to Duterte’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
Last year, Morales and Duterte walked down the aisle together when another nephew of the Ombudsman got married.
Despite their personal ties, the President urged Morales to be updated on the current state of affairs in the country, citing the problems of drugs and terrorism he was facing.
“Huwag ka magpa-hero kagaya ng iba. Hirap na nga ako dito, gusto mo pa mag-Obama ka,” he said.
In an interview with Japan’s NHK World on July 13, Morales said Duterte statements on killing were a “problem.”
“He’s goading people to kill people. That’s a problem. His communications people say, ‘that’s hyperbole,'” she said.
Morales said it was unacceptable for Duterte to threaten to kill people even if people or the police do not believe he will make good on his word.
