Duterte thankful for growing up ‘poor:’ Mayayaman lang nagde-desisyon pag eleksyon
Despite having a governor for a father, President Rodrigo Duterte said he was thankful he grew up poor because it served his political ambition later on.
In a speech at Senator Manny Pacquiao’s 39th birthday, Duterte said his father, Vicente, traveled to Davao from Cebu to seek greener pastures.
“I thank God that anak ako ng mahirap. And I am one of those descendants na who migrated to Mindanao in the early or late ’48, ’49, ’50.,” he said.
Vicente Duterte was the governor of Davao before it was split into three provinces.
Duterte said he was thankful he was not wealthy because Philippine politics has always been dominated or controlled by the rich.
“Ngayon, pasalamat ako na anak ako ng mahirap. Had it been na anak ako ng milyonaryo and probably because of the political environment in the Philippines… That’s the usual case. Sila-sila lang ang namimili sa ating destiny sa Pilipinas,” he said.
During the campaign period, Duterte often said he was poor. When allegations of ill-gotten wealth started, however, he said his father left them a small fortune before he died.
