Duterte wants CPP-NPA leaders Tiamzons back behind bars

Dec 7, 2017 @ 19:45

The Department of Justice has sought the return to jail of its leaders, Benito Tiamzon and his wife Wilma, even before President Rodrigo Duterte tagged communist rebels as terrorists.

The DOJ last November 28 filed a motion before the Manila regional trial court (RTC) Branch 32 seeking to cancel the bail of the couple and their fellow leader, Edilberto Silva.

“In view of the cancellation of the peace talks, there is no more legal ground for the continuous provisional liberty of the accused; thus, the immediate recommitment and cancellation of bail of all the accused should logically follow,” the motion filed by the DOJ’s National Prosecution Service (NPS) read.

The three are facing multiple murder charges at the Manila RTC over the alleged 1985 purge in Leyte against suspected military informants.

After halting peace talks, President Rodrigo Duterte last December 5 issued a proclamation declaring the Communist Party of Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing the New People’s Army (NPA) as terrorists.
