Duterte’s withdrawal from ICC ‘will only highlight his guilt’ — Alejano
Magdalo partylist Rep. Gary Alejano on Wednesday said President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to withdraw the Philippines from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) by withdrawing from the Rome Statute was a sign of guilt.
“This is an obvious, yet futile, attempt to elude his accountability in the international court,” the Magnificent 7 lawmaker said.
“It will not erase his crimes. It will only highlight his guilt. If Duterte, as he himself has so boasted, is confident that he is innocent and not liable, then he must not impede the investigation,” Alejano said.
The opposition lawmaker said Duterte was “oblivious to the repercussions of this decision.”
“He is undermining international law and further isolating the whole country from the international community. For small states such as the Philippines, it is international law that we are relying upon for protection,” he said.
“With this decision of Duterte, we might find ourselves with no recourse in the future should we again require the aid of these institutions,” Alejano said.
