Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, who currently represents Vice President Leni Robredo in the poll protest against her before the Supreme Court, would would be running for senator in the May 2019 polls.
This was confirmed by Liberal Party (LP) President Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan in an interview with Senate reporters Thursday (October 4).
“Nagkausap kami ni Vice President kahapon at nabanggit nga niya ‘yung interes ni Atty. Romy Mac na mapasama sa ticket ng opposition slate. Kausap ko kaninang umaga si Atty. Romy and we are now finalizing ‘yung kanyang inclusion sa opposition slate, sa coalition slate para sa darating na halalan,” Pangilinan said.
However, Pangilinan added that Macalintal might not take his oath as a LP member and may just appear as a guest candidate in the opposition slate.
Macalintal heads the legal team of Robredo in the poll protest case lodged against her by former Senator and 2016 vice presidential race loser Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Along with Macalintal, the LP is fielding Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, former Quezon 4th District Rep. Lorenzo Tañada III and De La Salle University – College of Law founding Dean Jose Manuel Diokno for the Senate.
The four would stand alongside other bets in a coalition opposition slate, with candidates from Magdalo, Akbayan Citizens’ Party, Aksyon Demokratiko and Tindig Pilipinas.
