Everybody happy! Duterte, allies dangle 10-year term extension to politikos backing federalism – Monsod
Former Commission on Elections chair Christian Monsod said that President Rodrigo Duterte has promised politikos – from the barangay to provinces to the Senate – that all of them would stay in power for at least 10 years.
“It’s not only the President who will have a extension of term. It’s everybody who is occupying the position in 2019 or today for the full term of the transition period,” said Monsod in an interview with with DZMM’s Ted Failon.
Monsod said Duterte’s “carrot” to incumbent officials was that they would stay in power for at least a decade during the transition period when federal government apparatus would be established in the regions. Monsod said the transition period could take up to 11 and a half years – 18 months to write the regional and local government codes and at least a decade to wait for the regions get ready to run as a federal state.
“Ang kanilang carrot to the incumbents all the way to the barangay is that during the transition period, those occupying office or get elected in 2019 will carry over during the transition period,. Alam na ninyo na ‘yung mga elected people will push for the approval of this Constitution because they will get another 10 or 11 years in office or more,” said Monsod.
“In our experience, ang nangyayari is one for you and for me, marami doon with the promise of extension,” he added.
