Fariñas shreds Alejano’s impeach rap vs. Duterte: Sana si Trillanes na lang complainant dito!

One of the top allies of President Rodrigo Duterte wasted no time in attacking the merits of the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano against President Rodrigo Duterte as soon as the House justice panel started its hearing Monday (May 15).

Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas took Alejano to task over the allegation he made in his impeachment complaint that Duterte was linked to the deaths of thousands of drug suspects and petty criminals starting from the time he was the mayor of Davao City.

“You took it upon yourself to state under oath that you have personal knowledge on this, but now you’re saying hindi pala,” Fariñas said.

In response, Alejano asked for a chance to deliver his opening statement but was shot down by the committee chair, Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali.

Fariñas, a lawyer, then told his colleague that he would be wasting the panel’s time if the allegations he made in the impeachment complaint were not based on his personal knowledge.

Alejano replied: “I affirm the contents of the verification that i have personal knowlege based on facts culled from authentic records.”

But Fariñas said there’s nowhere in the complaint in which Alejano testified to personally knowing the impeachable offenses he accused Duterte of.

“Sa complaint, according to Matobato, according to Lascañas. Clearly wala siyang personal knowledge,” he said, referring to self-confessed Davao Death Squad members Edgar Matobato and Arturo Lascañas, who had testified against the President.

“Lahat ito ay hearsay. These are from newspapers. Newspapers are not authentic records,” Fariñas added.

Aside from failing to show personal knowledge on Duterte’s alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings, Fariñas said Alejano has no evidence on the ill-gotten wealth supposedly amassed by the President.

But Alejano said he based the claim on Duterte’s supposed secret bank accounts on the exposé made by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.

To this, Fariñas retored: “Based on information given to Sen. Trillanes? Sana si Trillanes na lang nanumpa dito so we can question him.”

The House leader said Alejano just confirmed his impeachment complaint was already a “quadruple hearsay” because he based it on testimonies of witnesses, newspaper reports and Trillanes’ accusation against Duterte.

“Kayo ang tumatayong complainant, pero wala kayong kaalam-alam dito. Delikado kayo sa perjury,” he told Alejano.
