Feeling VIP! Justice De Castro’s testimony vs. Sereno to be treated like privilege speech
The House of Representatives justice committee is set to roll out the proverbial red carpet for Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita de Castro in the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Sources said De Castro will be the most important witness to be presented in the committee hearings, which will begin on November 22.
Because of her stature, lawmakers will treat De Castro’s testimony similar to a privilege speech. This means she can say whatever she wants against Sereno without the threat of contempt or lawsuit.
De Castro reportedly has an ax to grind against Sereno because she was one of senior magistrates bypassed by former President Benigno Aquino III in his appointment of a Chief Justice.
The magistrate was also reportedly displeased because Sereno turned down her request to use the Supreme Court’s funds to book first class seats for her overseas trips.
