Finally! IBP president lauds Carpio for accepting Chief Justice nomination
Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) President Abdiel Dan Elijah Fajardo has lauded the move of Supreme Court (SC) Justice Antonio Carpio to accept the nomination for the vacant chief justice seat.
“I am glad that SAJ Carpio has decided to add his name to the list of names the President may choose from in the appointment of the new CJ,” Fajardo said.
By tradition, senior justices of the SC are automatically nominated for the chief justice post and will only have to accept their nomination.
“This is a welcome opportunity for the President to test once again the virtue of seniority as a tool to stabilize the judiciary,” Fajardo said.
“The appointment of an experienced jurist, who is known for his adherence to the letter and spirit of the law, will also be in recognition of the independence of the judiciary as a co-equal branch of the other branches of government,” he added.
Apart from Carpio, two other senior magistrates have accepted their automatic nomination and they are Justices Diosdado Peralta and Lucas Bersamin.
Of the five senior magistrates, Justice Mariano Del Castill has declined his automatic nomination, while, Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe has yet to reach a decision.
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has already extended up to Oct. 26 its Oct. 15 deadline for the submission of applications for the chief justice seat.
The one who will be picked by Duterte will replace retired Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro who hung up her robe last Oct. 10.
