Top DOJ post up for grabs: Calida rejects offer to replace Aguirre
The search is on for a new Justice Secretary after Vitaliano Aguirre II resigned from his post.
Politiko learned that Solicitor General Jose Calida was offered to head the Department of Justice but he rejected it.
The dark horse in the race appears to be Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, who played a major role in coming up with the legal basis for the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute, which created the International Criminal Court.
Senator Francis Escudero is also said to be a contender for Justice Secretary.
Duterte on Thursday (April 5) said he has accepted Aguirre’s resignation.
Aguirre was rumored to be the next official to be fired by Duterte over the controversies he has been involved in.
Among Aguirre’s recent booboos were the state prosecutors’ dismissal of criminal charges against self confessed drug trader Kerwin Espinosa and businessman Peter Lim.
He has ordered the review of the dismissal of charges.
