Forget the ‘big one’: If it’s your time, it’s your time. Just pray it happens in another country – Duterte
President Rodrigo Duterte can’t see the point of getting nervous over what day will the massive earthquake finally strike as experts had long predicted.
In a speech before victims of a 6.5-magnitude quake in Ormoc, Leyte a week ago, Duterte said that every body would die anyway and there was no point losing sleep over it. He said the only thing a person could do was pray that a big earthquake strikes another country.Duterte made the remarks a day before the Metro Manila Development Authority launched a city-wide earthquake drill Friday.
“Ewan ko itong… Everybody is… Because there’s always a big — the big bang will happen, the big… So everybody is expecting it, everybody is nervous even in Mindanao. Kailan kaya mangyari?” Duterte said.
“But you know, forget it. We better sleep soundly. If it’s your time, it’s your time. Wala ka nang magawa diyan. Just pray to God that it will happen in some other — somebody else’s territory… Doon sa… Huwag sa atin, dito sa Pilipinas,” he added.
Duterte said that the Philippines, specifically the Visayas, has “suffered enough, actually natural and man-made calamities” that it probably needed a break.
“You know, the Visayas is a bit traumatic memory for the Filipinos, especially those who were present or who were there during the Typhoon Haiyan. It’s a deep wound in the memory of the Visayans of the eastern part of the Philippines,” he said.
