Freddie Aguilar gets ‘nominated’ by ‘fake’ PDP-Laban secgen
Folk singer Freddie Aguilar is running for senator under ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban)—but his certificate of nomination and acceptance (CONA) was issued by a leader of a party faction called as “fake.”
Aguilar’s CONA was issued by a certain Wilfredo M. Talag, who identified himself as the PDP-Laban’s secretary general.
PDP-Laban’s secretary general is Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, who was ousted as Speaker in July.
PDP-Laban President Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, in a text message to reporters, denied that Aguilar was issued a CONA by the party.
The CONA serves as the party’s official endorsement for its candidates.
Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said in a media briefing that the matter would be up for decision by “higher authorities,” presumably the Comelec en banc.
“Kasi may claim, may counterclaim, kailangang pagbanggain,” Jimenez said.
Two factions of the PDP-Laban have been at odds with each other, with both camps claiming to be the legitimate party.
President Rodrigo Duterte, recognized by both groups as its chair, has attempted to mend the rift between the two, but has failed.
