Garapal talaga! Duterte bares MVP’s P3B demand to return frequency PLDT got for free
Businessman Manny V. Pangilinan demanded P3 billion in exchange for returning the frequency that a shell company of PLDT-Smart obtained for free, President Rodrigo Duterte said.
In a speech before local politikos in Cebu Monday (February 12), Duterte scored the duopoly of PLDT-Smart and Globe Telecoms for getting frequencies they will not use to prevent the entry of other telco players.
Duterte wanted the return of the frequency obtained by PLDT-Smart’s subsidiary, CURE (Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprise, Inc.) so they can be used by the third telco he wants to bring into the country.
“Wala silang ibinayad ni singko sentimos. Ngayon gusto ko nang isauli kasi hindi nagamit kasi they are hanging onto it, itong dalawa para walang competition makapasok. Kita mo naman kalokohan ng…,” he said.
Duterte, however, said he was told by Department of Information and Communications Technology officer in charge Eliseo Rio at a Cabinet meeting that the government needs to pay P3 billion for the return of CURE’s frequency.
“Sabi ni Rio, military pud, sabi niya, ‘Mayor ‘yung pabayarin man tayo ng three billion.’ Pumutok talaga ako. P***** i** kayo, sabi ko,” he said.
Duterte said he told Rio to tell PLDT-Smart and Globe Telecoms not to “f*ck the government.”
“I’ll give them 24 hours. ‘Pag hindi nasauli ‘yan, kung ano ‘yung sabi nilang three billion na reimbursement, I will send the BIR tomorrow to start the audit of your company and all others ‘yung negosyo ninyo,'” he said.
A day after Roque shared Duterte’s threat to the telco duopoly, PLDT announced it will be returning CURE’s frequency for free.
Duterte said PLDT did not want trouble.
“Pagka umaga tawag na ‘yung buang. Sabihin mo kay Mayor isauli na — we do not want an issue with them,” he said.
