Senate President Tito Sotto might have proposed the return of death penalty against drug traffickers to put an end to extrajudicial killings, according to Teddy Boy Locsin Jr., the country’s permanent representative to the United States.

Locsin defended Sotto’s position on death penalty even though the former Makati lawmaker has opposed capital punishment in the country.

“I oppose the death penalty, but maybe this is his way to take away any excuse for extrajudicial killing unless it is absolutely necessary in self-defense. C’mon, give the guy a break,” Locsin tweeted.

Sotto, who assumed leadership of the upper chamber last week, has backed the restoration of death penalty for high-level drug trafficking cases.
