Gordon tells Duterte he’s wrong: Why are you wasting political capital on a killer like Marcos?
President Duterte is treading on dangerous ground, said Sen. Richard Gordon on Thursday.
Gordon was reacting to Duterte’s move to reinstate and promote Supt. Marvin Marcos as head of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) SOCCKSARGEN, one of the principal accused in the killing of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr.
“I’m upset quite frankly. Disappointed is a very weak word. I’m chagrined. It doesn’t matter what I feel but I do feel for justice. There are many people who are victims of injustice here,” Gordon told reporters.
“I’m sorry Mr. President, I’m your friend but I will tell you the truth,” he said and proceeded to question why Duterte, who is currently enjoying a record-high public approval rating, was expending his political capital for police scalawags who clearly abused their powers and committed a serious crime.
“Eh talaga namang napatunayan at ultimo yung kanyang Secretary of justice (Vitaliano Aguirre II said it was) evident (that there was) premeditation at double murder. Sinabi dyan (in the Senate hearing). Eh bakit ba inaaksaya nya yung political capital dyan? Hindi dapat yan. It’s very, very wrong on the part of the President because he should not interfere in the justice system,” Gordon told reporters in an interview.
Gordon expected a public backlash against the President and he hoped that he would realize this soon
“I’m not an ally (but) I will always say what I think is right. I’m a friend of the President because we’re both been mayors, he has not lost my respect so far. But as far as I’m concerned this is wrong. This is not the right thing to do, he doesn’t have to do it and to my mind justice is not served by doing that. It sends a bad signal to other policemen in the country na akala nila porke sila’y pulis they can do anything now. Yun ang ayoko dyan. That is what I don’t like about this,” he said.
