Here’s why Filipinos are poor, according to Binay camp
The Philippines is poor because the Aquino government screwed up the agriculture sector, the economic geniuses from Vice President Jejomar Binay’s camp said Monday.
Lawyer Rico Quicho, Binay’s spokesperson, said the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) performance under President Benigno Aquino III hasn’t been stellar. Instead it’s been mired in controversies, he noted.
“The Department of Agriculture, headed by Secretary Proceso Alcala, a Liberal Party (LP) stalwart, misused some P14 billion in funds, including more than P6 billion for farm-to-market roads which were never built,” Quicho said.
“Secretary Alcala has likewise been tagged in the alleged transfer of P39 million linked to Janet Lim-Napoles. COA na po mismo ang nagsasabi nito,” he pointed out.
Napoles is of course the main schemer behind the P10-billion “pork barrel” corruption scandal.
Quicho said that while the economy has grown steadily under the Aquino administration, those living under the poverty line haven’t felt these so-called economic gains.
He said that an IBON Foundation report showed that 60 percent of Filipinos consider themselves as poor. (Randy K. Ortega)
