House creates 3 new congressional panels

New congressional panels have been created as part of the reorganization by Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Majority Floor Leader Rolando “Nonoy” Andaya Jr. (Camarines Sur) said aside from the Oversight Committee dissolved during the Aquino administration, the House leadership has created the Committee on Disaster Management and the Special Panel for Senior Citizens.
Minority Floor Leader Danilo Suarez already revealed earlier this week that he would chair the oversight committee which he previously headed during the 14th Congress.
According to Suarez, it is the duty of the oversight panel to be the check and balance of government agencies.
“This shall coincide with the thrust of this administration against corruption, the improvement of the absorptive capacity of all government agencies, provision of basic services, and economic, social and infrastructure development in the country,” said Suarez.
The Quezon legislator noted that the principle of checks and balances was embedded in the 1987 Constitution to ensure that “there will be no abuse of power and to correct mistakes or excesses committed by the other branches of the government.”
