House justice panel: 1 of 2 impeach complaints vs Sereno ‘sufficient in form, substance’
The House of Representatives committee on justice found the complaint filed by lawyer Larry Gadon against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to be sufficient in form and substance.
The committee found the complaint sufficient in form by a vote of 30-4.
The members also voted 30-4 finding the complaint sufficient in substance.
But the second impeachment complaint filed by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption chairperson and Vanguard of the Philippine Constitution, Inc. was dismissed for insufficiency in form due to a technicality.
The complainants had used the wrong phrasing in their verification, according to Majority Floor Leader Rudy Fariñas.
The committee gave Sereno 10 calendar days to answer the charges. After that, the committee will set hearings to determine if there is probable cause to impeach Sereno and send the case to the Senate acting as an impeachment court.
