Ilayo sa masama: Win Gatchalian wants gov’t to be stricter in choice of countries for OFWs
The protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) must be the “primordial” concern of government, Sen. Win Gatchalian said on Tuesday.
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered a ban on the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait following the recent case of a dead Filipina found in a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait.
There were over 80 cases of abuse and maltreatment recorded since 2016 against OFWs in the Gulf State.
“We should no longer allow OFWs in counties where we don’t have strong bilateral agreements to protect our OFWs,” Gatchalian said.
“More so, we should no long send OFWs to counties where mechanisms and laws for the protection of migrant workers are nonexistent,” he said.
Gatchalian added, “Everyday, I personally receive cries for help from our families here in the PH for their relatives who are being abused abroad.”
“Unfortunately, 100% of the reports of abuse and maltreatment of our OFWs emanated from the Middle East especially from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait,” he said.
“Moreover, these two countries have very weak policies on the protection of migrant workers leaving each foreign nationality to defend themselves against abusive employers,” the senator said.
