Imelda’s guilty verdict a warning to Duterte: Nobody gets away with murder forever – Etta Rosales
Former Commission on Human Rights chairperson Etta Rosales said President Rodrigo Duterte should take as a warning former First Lady Imelda Marcos’ guilty verdict for graft.
Rosales said the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division’s sentencing Marcos up to 77 years in jail and banning her from holding any government post showed that those who act with impunity would eventually pay for their sins.
She likened Marcos’ impunity on human rights and corruption to the extrajudicial killings under Duterte and that the guilty verdict proved that anybody would pay for their impunity.
Rosales said the Sandiganbayan’s adverse ruling against Marcos showed that the courts would not tolerate impunity even under the Duterte administration.
“Institutionalized impunity going on right now but with the court’s decision, as far as Sandiganbayan is concerned, hindi puwedeng walang kaparusahan. You must have your day in court… they can’t get away with murder,” said Rosales.
