Joint session on martial law in Mindanao tentatively set on Dec. 12 — Sotto
President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to call a joint session of Congress on December 12 to ask for another extension of martial law in Mindanao next year, according to Senate President Vicente Sotto III.
“Monday morning may briefing kami from AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines). I’m still waiting for the President’s letter re joint session,” he said in a text message.
Sotto added: “He (Duterte) sent me a message saying he might call for it on Wednesday, Dec. 12. But nothing is concrete until i receive his letter.”
The AFP and Philippine National Police (PNP) have recommended the extension of martial law in Mindanao until the end of 2019.
The state of martial law in Mindanao, which Congress has extended twice, will expire on December 31. It was declared after the Marawi City siege in May 2017.
