Just in time: Bill postponing barangay, SK polls up for President’s signing
Barely a month to go before the polls, the Senate and the House of Representatives finally readied the bill to postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections for signing into law by President Rodrigo Duterte.
This developed after the House agreed to adopt the Senate version moving the barangay and SK elections from October 2017 to October next year. The House earlier proposed a May 2018 schedule.
House Majority Leader Rudy Fariñas said the decision was reached since the Senate had adopted the major provisions of the House version, anyway.
“In short, we will adopt the Senate version to forestall the need of a Bicameral Conference Committee to reconcile minor differences of the bills,” he said. “The Committees on Suffrage & Electoral Reforms and Appropriations, through Chairpersons Tugna and Nograles, respectively, gave their concurrence to the above,” he added.
The bill will be transmitted to Malacañang for Duterte’s signature this week, Fariñas said.
