Kaibigan daw: Duterte’s new BFFs Putin, Xi Jinping have not offered to help PH fight terrorists in Marawi – Abella

Jun 13, 2017 @ 17:31

Three weeks since hundreds of Maute and Abu Sayyaf group fighters overran Marawi City, Malacanang said that China and Russia have not made any offers to help the Philippines end the battle which has dragged into its third week.

“As far as we know, there are no direct offers regarding the matters. But we’ve been doing pretty well considering the situation,” said Presidential Spokesperson Ernie Abella in a briefing.

The lack of support from either China or Russia has become a major issue especially after President Rodrigo Duterte has declared his plan to pivot away from its traditional ally, the United States, and has spent the first ten months trying to forge closer ties with China President Xi Jinping and Russia President Vladimir Putin.

The Armed Forces has acknowledged the help of the US in flushing out the terrorists out of Marawi as American spy planes gave Filipino soldiers more accurate and updated combat information on the ground. The US extended a helping hand even if Duterte did not ask for any support.

“I have not made an appeal. I said I did not even know that the American government has been providing technical. Totoo ‘yan, I never approached any American to say that, ‘Tumulong kayo’. Maski wala man silang tulong. Siguro meron man. Ako, nagpapasalamat lang rin ako nandiyan na rin it could save lives,” said Duterte in a media interview last July 11.

He admitted that his push for an independent foreign policy could just be a pipe dream because the military could not defend the country on its own. He also conceded that Filipino soldiers ties to the US were so deeply-rooted to be discarded so easily.

“Gusto ko nga sana eh kasi may giyera eh. And we are not that powerful. Maybe we do not have the technical expertise to do it. That is why itong mga Philippine Army natin, most of them or all of them, nag-schooling ito sa America. So ito talaga ang sentimento nito, pro-American, pro-American talaga ang mga sundalo natin, that I cannot deny. Kasi sabi ko ‘yung mga sundalo natin galing lang lahat… Almost all officers will go to America to study about militaristic thing. Kaya meron ‘yan silang rapport and I cannot deny that,” said Duterte.
