Kakayanin kaya? Here’s the magic number LP needs to keep its seat in CA
The Liberal Party would have to stop the continuing exodus of its members to the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) if it wants to keep its seat in the Commission on Appointments (CA).
Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas on Wednesday (May 17) said the LP’s lone representative to the powerful group, Occidental Mindoro Rep. Josephine Ramirez Sato, will lose her position if the party’s membership goes down to 23.
He explained that a party in the House must have at least 24 members to qualify for a seat in the CA since the legislative chamber has 292 members.
“So ngayon kung isang party ito, LP that you say pag may 32 ito ay entitled sila ng isang seat. Ngayon kung bumaba sa 23 iyon, wala na,” Fariñas said.
The LP’s leadership has dwindled from 32 at the start of the 17th Congress last year to 27 earlier this month with the exodus of Reps. Ansaruddin Adiong (Lanao del Sur), Nancy Catamco (North Cotabato), Alfred Vargas III (Quezon City), Winnie Castelo (Quezon City), and Geraldine Roman (Bataan).
Its membership may go down further to 25 if Reps. Edgar Sarmiento and Christopher “Toff” De Venecia push through with their plan to join PDP-Laban.
