Amendments that will be made in the 1987 Constitution should serve the interest of the country and not just one political party, Sen. Francis Pangilinan on Sunday said.

“Kahit LP ho tayo, Liberal Party, hindi po natin tinatalakay ang constitutional amendments para sa interes ng isang partido kundi para sa interes ng ating Republika at ng ating kababayan,” Pangilinan, LP president, said in an interview with dzBB’s Nimfa Ravelo.

Pangilinan assured that the opposition would provide the check and balance to ensure the Charter change would be for the good of the country.

“So if we are critical or we are opposing, that’s because ganun ang ating demokrasya at sinasabi ng ating Saligang Batas, kaya tayo may three branches of govenrment, ang judiciary, ang executive at ang legislative, tatlong sangay para binabantayan ang bawat sangay,” he said.

“That is this principle of check and balance in our democracy. So what we’re doing is actually our duty. It is a constitutional duty to act as a check yung minority in the Senate,” Pangilinan further said.

The opposition senator assured that they will not allow any unnecessary delay, much more the railroading of the deliberations on Cha-cha and other matters related to the called amendments in the Constitution.
