Kung ayaw, di wag! Duterte tells AFP not to buy equipment from US, Canada
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the military to refrain from buying military equipment from the United States and Canada amid the uproar over the Philippines’ $233-million deal with Canada.
In a press conference in Davao City Friday (February 9), Duterte said he respects Canada’s concern that the aircraft will be used to fight rebels.
“Do not buy anymore from Canada or from the United States because there is always a condition attached,” he said.
Duterte said the Philippines will “collapse” if the military does not use its assets against terrorists.
Sixteen Bell 412EPI helicopters were due to be delivered to the Philippines next year.
Malacañang earlier said the aircraft will not be used to attack rebels, but to transport wounded or dead soldiers.
