Kunwari lang ayaw: Monsod says Duterte lying about not wanting to rule beyond 2022
Lawyer Christian Monsod believes President Rodrigo Duterte is taking Filipinos for a ride whenever he declares that he does not want extend his term beyond the six-year term limit in 2022.
In an interview with DZMM’s Ted Failon. the former Commission on Elections chair said: “Kunwari lang yan kasi po, kung ‘di po siya talaga interested in more power beyond 2022, eh bakit nya papayagan ito? Hawak naman niya Kongreso. ‘di po ba?”
Monsod, one of the framers of the 1987 Constitution, was referring to the all-out efforts by Duterte and the co-opted House of Representatives to railroad charter changes this month through a Constituent assembly and have the shift to federalism up for a referendum in May.
Monsod noted that Duterte initially promised to step down once the people approved the shift from a Republican form of government to federalism as his “legacy” to Filipinos.
“But that is not what he is talking about now. Now he is saying ‘Puwede ma-extend kung gusto ng Kongreso’. Eh Kongreso niya eto, eh di po ba?” said Monsod citing Duterte’s notoriety in making promises to be popular but with no intention of fulfilling them.
