Level up! GMA wants to become BSP gov instead of Speaker – report
Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is reportedly cool to becoming House Speaker because she has set her sights on another post: the governorship of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
Philippine Star columnist Boo Chanco on Wednesday (March 1) said there are rumors that Arroyo wants to head the BSP as replacement for the outgoing Amando Tetangco Jr.
“If the rumor that GMA is interested to be BSP governor herself is true, she probably figured out it is better than being speaker and eventually prime minister once the Constitution is revised to have a unicameral parliamentary government,” Chanco said.
The columnist said it was possible that Arroyo wanted to become BSP governor because she “wants to show she is still capable of meeting new challenges in her senior years.”
“Maybe she is getting sick of politics and wants to redeem her reputation,” he said.
However, Chanco said it is also possible that Arroyo wants to head the BSP if only to prevent someone from PDP-Laban from heading the central bank, as some stalwarts from President Rodrigo Duterte’s political party reportedly prefer.
One of the frontrunners in the race to become BSP governor is Arroyo’s protege and ally, former Trade Secretary Peter Favila.
“Maybe GMA will claim the position only to hand it out to Favila later,” Chanco said.
Before Arroyo’s supposed preference to become BSP governor emerged, there was talk that she will soon replace House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
