Students from 112 state universities and colleges would no longer pay tuition fees beginning this semester, Senator Bam Aquino said.
“Kahapon, kinumpirma ko na implemented na po ito this second semester. So lahat ng mage-enroll this second semester, dapat wala nang kinokolektang tuition at miscellaneous expenses,” said Aquino in a radio interview.
Aquino said the Commission on Higher Education confirmed to him that several state universities and colleges would no longer collect tuition fees one semester earlier than expected.
The government initially planned for RA 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act to be implemented in academic year 2018-2019.
Aquino also said that legislators have allocated P40 million in the 2018 national budget to finance the free tuition scheme in the next academic year.
The senator stated that free tuition in state universities and colleges will encourage students who failed to finish their degree to continue their studies.
