LP’s advice to Koko: Focus on important issues, not impeachment
Liberal Party (LP) senators in the minority bloc on Monday (Mar. 20) lashed out at Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III for saying impeachment proceedings against Vice President Leni Robredo are likely to prosper in the House of Representatives.
In a statement Monday (March 20), Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, and Senators Risa Hontiveros, Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan and Paolo Benigno Aquino IV urged Pimentel to focus instead on numbers pertaining to “thousands of unresolved murders, the rising prices of basic goods and the 13-million hectare undersea region rich in minerals and biodiversity of Benham Rise.”
“Thede are the numbers that we should all be focusing on, not the 100 votes of congressmen on the impeachment case threatened by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Solicitor General Jose Calida on Vice President Robredo,” they said.
Pimentel said in a radio interview Sunday (March 19) that impeachment proceedings against Robredo have a bigger chance of succeeding in the House because of the massive support base enjoyed by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
Pimentel said Alvarez can easily muster the estimated 100 lawmakers needed to transmit an impeachment complaint against Robredo to the Senate considering that 230 House members are part of the super majority bloc.
Alvarez has said he is mulling on filing an impeachment complaint against Robredo over her criticism of the government’s war on drugs in a video message to the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
The LP senators, however, said Robredo was well within her right to speak up on the war on drugs.
“The video message showed the world that the Philippines enjoys democracy where dissent is respected,” they said.
