Magkakasibakan na? Duterte: Lorenzana wants narco-mayors out of power
Mayors suspected of corruption and involvement in the illegal drug trade may soon be on their way out if President Rodrigo Duterte heeds the advice of Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
In a press briefing in Marawi City Thursday (September 21), Duterte said Lorenzana, the chief implementor of martial law in Mindanao, recommended to him that “all mayors tainted with corruption and drugs be placed out of power.”
“Maybe I’ll suspend them after the investigation or I will censure them or I may dismiss them. Most likely, if it’s really positive, I will mete the worst punishment,” he said.
Three mayors suspected of involvement in drugs have died since Duterte assumed office last year: Datu Saudi-Ampatuan, Maguindanao Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom, Albuerta, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, and Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr.
Duterte has said that he had talked to mayors in private in Malacañang to warn them against dabbling in the illegal drug trade.
