May basbas na ni Leni? Miro says LP in Majority won’t back Digong impeachment
Deputy Speaker Miro Quimbo reiterated Friday (April 21) that he and his fellow Liberal Party (LP) members in the House Majority won’t support any impeachment moves in the Lower Chamber.
But this time, he claimed that the LP-Majority members have the blessing of the party’s interim chairman, Vice President Leni Robredo.
In a statement, Quimbo confirmed that some 15 LP stalwarts from the pro-President Rodrigo Duterte Majority bloc met with Robredo Thursday, April 20.
“We eventually discussed the issue of impeachment. We came to a common consensus on the following matters: we strongly believe that the taking up by the HOR of any impeachment complaint today will only be divisive as well as polarizing. It will only serve to distract us from the many important matters that congress should be giving priority to,” he said.
“For these very imperative reasons, the LP House majority caucus members present categorically took a position that we will not support any of the impeachment complaints filed against the leaders of the land,” added Quimbo, who represents Marikina City.
There are two brewing impeachment complaints in the House of Representatives (HOR)–one against Duterte and one against Robredo. The one against the Vice President is being pushed by Duterte’s allies.
Quimbo said the LP members present in the meeting “reiterated our strongest commitment of support to the Vice President, our party leader.”
“We will have subsequent meetings before Congress opens in May to update LP members who were out of town and thus could not attend the meeting,” he said.
Of the 32 LP members in the HOR, 27 are with the Majority or Supermajority.
Last month, an LP politiko in the opposition, Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman, belied Quimbo’s claim that the LP congressmen won’t be supporting the impeachment against Duterte, saying the party members have yet to be consulted.
