May kalaban ang China! Andanar: PT&T eyeing 3rd telco player slot
China Telecoms has got competition in its quest to become the third player in the Philippine telecommunications industry.
Communications Secretary Martin Andanar on Tuesday (January 9) said the Philippine Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (PT&T) has expressed interest in competing head-to-head against PLDT and Globe Telecoms.
Andanar said he received Department of Information and Communications Technology Acting Secretary Eliseo Rio shared about PT&T’s interest during the Cabinet meeting on January 8.
“Nabanggit nga ng DICT Acting Secretary Rio na dalawa ang so far interested na maging third player sa telecommunications industry. Una, iyong China Telecom, plus iyong consortium na hindi pa ho nababanggit; at pangalawa pong nasa listahan ay iyong grupong PT&T ay iyong kanilang partner na Korean telecom company,” Andanar said in a radio interview.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque earlier said China Telecoms will be prioritized in its bid to become the third telco player since President Rodrigo Duterte offered the slot to China.
However, Roque said the Chinese company would have to partner with a local firm under a 60-40 ownership scheme.
While Andanar did not go into details about PT&T’s plan, he said DICT is committed to ensure the third telco is already operational by March.
“First quarter magsimula, second quarter this year masimulan na sana iyan at minamadali na po iyan, talagang inaapura po iyan ng DICT para maging competitive po ang ating telecoms industry,” he said.
