May magbabago ba? Andanar takes charge of PNA as head of newly created editorial board
Communications Secretary Martin Andanar has decided to become more involved in the Philippine News Agency’s operations in light of its recent gaffes, which has made it the laughing stock of netizens.
Andanar on Monday (August 14) said he has created an editorial board with him as the head for the PNA to avoid committing similar mistakes in the future.
Joining Andanar in the editorial board are Communications Undersecretary Joel Egco, a former editor and chief of reporters of The Manila Times; Assistant Secretary Joseph Lawrence Garcia; consultant Albert Gamboa; PNA chief Virginia Arcilla Agtay and PNA acting Executive Editor Louie Morente.
Andanar had a meeting with the PNA editorial staff after the website drew flak for posting an opinion piece from the Chinese-run Xinhua News Agency calling the arbitral ruling on the South China Sea an “ill-founded” award.
On August 11, the website posted an article on pay rules for 2018 holidays with the logo of DOLE Food Company, instead of the Labor Department.
During the meeting, Andanar said he reminded PNA reporters and editors that the public expects the highest standards of professionalism from them.
He said they must always exercise “due diligence and propriety.”
Andanar said he has directed his legal officers to determine the culpability of the PNA officials with regard to the agency’s latest boo-boos.
“We are all in one team, one family. We will do what is necessary to improve our services. The people expect proficiency, no less,” he said.
