President Rodrigo Duterte has pushed for the construction of temporary shelters for disaster-affected populations.
Duterte made the pitch during his command conference on typhoon Ompong at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Operations Center in Camp Crame on Thursday.
“It’s about time that we build ‘yung semento as temporary shelters that can be used by the people during (a natural disaster),” the President told his Cabinet officials.
Duterte said classes are disrupted due to prolonged use of schools as emergency shelters.
“Kasi ang ano ko diyan — my misgiving, ang mga bata napuputol for the — for the longer they stay in the school, the longer would be the disturbance of the education of the children,” the chief executive said.
“It’s about time that (NDRRMC executive director Undesecretary Ricardo) Jalad thinks of this. ‘Yun talagang mga frontliners na lugar: Leyte, Samar, itong Cagayan, Isabela, makagawa man lang tayo parang gym puro semento. Oo, parang gym lang with so many perhaps 10 CRs for women and 10 na — ihiwalay mo lang babae lalaki,” he added.
Duterte said he expects the government to build at least 14 temporary shelters next year.
“Parang simple lang na with strong — I think you have to use the metal iron. Parang gym lang, habaan mo lang ‘yung upuan para mag… And if we can build about siguro maski 14 muna next year — early next year kung masali natin sa — mahabol sa budget,” he said.
