Minalas lang talaga: Duterte says PNoy ain’t at fault for Mamasapano tragedy
President Rodrigo Duterte has cleared former President Benigno Aquino III of any criminal liability in connection with the 2015 Mamasapano tragedy.
In an interview after the submission of the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law in Malacañang Monday (July 17), Duterte said it was just Aquino’s bad luck that the covert “Oplan Exodus” went awry.
“Wala. Talagang talo, malas,” he said when asked who among Aquino, former Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima and former Special Action Force chief Getulio Napeñas should bear the brunt of responsibility for the botched police operation.
While Duterte said the shortcomings in the operation will always be Aquino’s burden, he also acknowledged the dilemma his predecessor faced when the beleaguered SAF troopers sought reinforcements while fighting various armed groups in Mamasapano, Maguindanao in January 2015.
The elite police commandos were deployed to the area to serve an arrest warrant on foreign terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan.
“There was no assistance, reinforcements, the military air assets, the cannons there, it could have reached… But then you cannot do it, because you will also kill the people, the women, and children there. Magkagulo tuloy,” Duterte said.
The President has described as “silly” the graft and usurpation of authority charges filed by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales against Aquino.
He said the charges are bound to fail since Aquino, as President, had the freedom to consult anyone he wants regarding Oplan Exodus.
