UP Mindanao students protest tuition collection
A protest against the collection of tuition marked the start of the enrollment period for students from the University of the Philippines in Mindanao.
The protest stemmed partly from an announcement by the school administration that it will continue to collect tuition.
Some of the students held a rally at the lobby of the Administration Building in the UP Mindanao campus last Aug. 1.
Earlier, Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno announced the government cannot afford to provide free education for state colleges and universities (http://davaotoday.com/main/economy/education/up-mindanao-students-protest-collection-of-tuition/).
Last July 28, the UP Mindanao administration said it will defer the assessment and collection of student fees for the first semester of Academic Year 2017-2018 pending instructions from the UP System.
But University Student Council Chairperson Romen Samuel Wabina said the guidelines were unclear.
