Re-electionist Senator Ma. Lourdes “Nancy” Binay and outgoing Bureau of Corrections Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa led the pack of senatorial aspirants who filed their certificates of candidacies Friday.
Binay arrived the main office of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Intramuros, Manila past 9 a.m.
The senator first dropped at the nearby Manila Cathedral, where she was accompanied by her husband, Jose Benjamin Angeles and his brother, former Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay.
The Binays are reportedly having an internal family rift as the only son and namesake of former Vice President Jejomar Binay will most likely challenge his other sister, incumbent Mayor Mar-Len Abigail Binay-Campos for the mayoralty of Makati City.
Meanwhile, Dela Rosa arrived at the Palacio del Gobernador where COMELEC is currently holding office around 10:20 a.m. The former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief who is running under the ruling administration party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) was accompanied by his wife and dozens of supporters.
Dela Rosa vowed to help professionalize the PNP if elected next year.
“Gusto ko sanang mawala ‘yung impluwensiya ng politika sa PNP para ma-professionalize ang kapulisan,” said Dela Rosa.
He added that he will file a proposal to integrate the Bureau of Corrections and the Bureau of Jail, Management and Penology into one prison department.
A total of 10 senatorial aspirants went at the COMELEC main office on Friday according to the poll body spokesman, James Jimenez.
Since Thursday, Jimenez said that 37 senatoriables have already filed their respective candidacies.
