Nang-usisa pa! Police presence at Ateneo rally causes unease
Students and faculty members of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) have expressed concern about the presence of policemen at their rally against extrajudicial killings (EJKs).
According to The Guidon, ADMU’s official student paper, two policemen alighted from an unlicensed black police car near Gate 2.5 of the university on Thursday night (August 24).
Gate 2.5 was the venue of the protest held by members of the Ateneo community to protest against EJKs and condemn the death of 17-year-old Kian Loyd Delos Santos.
Around 40 to 50 people were present at the rally.
Two policemen reportedly asked a female ADMU staff member who approached their car about the purpose of the rally, as well as the names of the leaders.
The staff member refused.
Uneasy about the policemen’s presence, the protesters were asked to go back inside the campus.
The policemen, however, stayed inside their vehicle until past 9 p.m. even if the area was already empty.
The police patrol car was later identified with the ID “QCPD-237” on its body. However, ADMU security personnel were unable to scan the cops’ names and faces.
The incident has drawn condemnation on social media, with several netizens denouncing it as a form of police intimidation.
