No compelling reason for Duterte to declare suspension of habeas corpus– Palace
The Palace gave assurances on Monday (Nov. 28, 2016) that President Duterte has no reason at this time to call for the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus after a bomb-throwing incident infront of the US embassy and the attacks against a splinter group in Mindanao.
Presidential Communications Sec. Martin Andanar was quick to douse reports.
“President Duterte finds no compelling reason to suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus at this point,” he said. “As a strong advocate of the rule of law, he is fully aware of the limits of presidential powers,” Andanar added.
Duterte, as the Commander-in-chief, trusts the capability and competence of Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald de la Rosa to maintain law and order and to serve and protect the citizenry.
“He knows that General de la Rosa is up to the job and can handle any untoward incident and the over-all situation very well. Given this, President Duterte believes any intervention at his level is unnecessary,” Andanar said.
