Dapat ring matanggal! Opposition solons to file impeachment raps vs. 7 SC justices who ousted Sereno
By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN
MANILA – Opposition lawmakers will file impeachment complaints on Thursday against the seven justices of the Supreme Court (SC) who voted to remove former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno through a quo warranto case.
The impeachment raps will be filed Akbayan Party-list Representative Tom Villarin, Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, and Magdalo Partylist Rep. Gary Alejano.
The Supreme Court justices who voted for the grant of the quo warranto petition are Associate Justices Teresita Leonardo-De Castro, Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Francis Jardeleza, Samuel Martires, Noel Tijam, Andres Reyes Jr., and Alexander Gesmundo.
Martires was not included in the upcoming complaint since he was appointed as Ombudsman earlier this month following the retirement of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales last July.
In June, Villarin said he and other opposition lawmakers will file impeachment complaints against the SC justices who voted to remove Sereno as soon as they finished compiling pertinent facts relevant to the individual charges.
Sereno was ousted from her office last May after the Supreme Court voted to grant the quo warranto case filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida against her.
The magistrates who voted to oust Sereno said she should not hold office due to her failure to file all of her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth as a professor at the University of the Philippines.
Villarin said the impeachment complaints were carefully drafted so they can’t be easily dismissed on the committee level just because of a mere technicality.
