Paano na ang Kapamilya? GMA franchise extension puts great pressure on ABS-CBN
The pressure has risen considerably on ABS-CBN to have its franchise renewed after President Rodrigo Duterte approved the 25-year franchise extension of its rival media network, GMA Network Inc.
On Wednesday (April 27), Duterte signed into law Republic Act (RA) No. 10925, extending the franchise of GMA, an Inquirer report said.
The franchise of the “Kapuso” network, which operates TV channels, a radio station and an online site, was supposed to expire this year.
ABS-CBN or the “Kapamliya” network, on the other hand, has an existing franchise that will run until March 30, 2020.
It’s renewal application remains pending in the 17th Congress before Palawan Rep. Franz Alvarez’s Committee on Legislative Franchises. In fact, ABS-CBN’s application has been hanging since the previous administration.
Incidentally, Duterte has recently relapsed into assailing ABS-CBN, which he claimed was too critical of him during the campaign period last year. Digong of course won the 2016 presidential race via landslide.
The former Davao City mayor will be in Malacañang until 2022, meaning the Kapamilya network will have to think of a way to appease Duterte and his allies in Congress–and fast.
