Palace welcomes Sandiganbayan decision on Imelda Marcos: Justice system in PH working!
Malacanang on Friday said it respects the decision by the anti-graft court to convict former First Lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos of seven counts of graft.
“The Executive Branch is not in the business of exerting undue interference or influence in the affairs of another separate and independent branch of the government,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
The Sandiganbayan 5th Division early today found Rep. Marcos guilty in connection with her Swiss bank accounts during the Marcos government. She was sentenced for six years to 11 years for each count and was barred perpetually from holding public office.
Panelo said the anti-graft court’s guilty verdict against Imelda Marcos “underscores that our country currently has a working and impartial justice system that favors no one.”
He added, “We treat this decision by the anti-graft court as a good reminder to all public servants that public office is a public trust and that we are all accountable to the people we serve. As servants of the people, we must therefore carry out our duties not only with professionalism and fidelity but most importantly, with integrity.”
